Dr. Ute Engelkenmeier ist Bibliothekarin. Sie studierte Öffentliches Bibliothekswesen an der FHBD in Köln (Dipl.-Bibl. (FH)) mit anschließendem musikbibliothekarischen Zusatzstudium an der HBI Stuttgart und folgend Master of Arts (LIS) und Promotion an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin am Institut für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft. Sie ist seit Mai 1995 beschäftigt an der Universitätsbibliothek Dortmund und dort aktuellGeschäftsbereichsleitung Service und Information (Benutzung). Seit 2018 ist Ute Engelkenmeier Vorsitzende des Bundesvorstands des Berufsverband Information Bibliothek e.V. (sowie Mitglied der DINI AG Lernräume; Mitglied im IFLA Standing Committee Management of LibraryAssociations; Vorstandsmitglied Dachverband BID - Bibliothek Information Deutschland).

How librarians in a networked age must fight to preserve the common good and help our citizens find meaning in the chaos.
We keep using the phrase “unprecedented” for the time we live in…a global pandemic, environment in crisis, the rise of xenophobia and the deterioration of democracy…but is it? History shows us that there are precedents and that it takes concerted social action to improve society. It also suggests the role of librarians in the compound crisis of pandemic and infodemic. In my talk I will discuss the historical precedents for library activism to not only serve our communities, but to save them as well.
R. David Lankes ist mit Leidenschaft ein lauter Fürsprecher für Bibliotheken und ihrer zentralen Rolle in der heutigen Gesellschaft. Besonders in seinem einschlägigen Buch "Erwarten Sie mehr. Verlangen Sie bessere Bibliotheken in einer komplexeren Welt" (dt. Übersetzung von 2017) plädiert er unter anderem für die Bibliothek als Dienerin ihrer Community. Mit diesem Hintergrund passt Lankes perfekt zur #vBIB21.
